The following services described below are tools to assure the best interest of the child(ren). With an open mind one can see the advantages that can be gained through these services.

SUPERVISED/ MONITORED EXCHANGES
           ... are limited to facilitate the exchange or transfer of the child between parents while the rest of the visitation is unsupervised. This type of service is mostly required when the parents can not come in contact with each other e.g. domestic violence issues.
Exchange services can be arraged as to the needs of the parents. It can be at a neutral place where the Provider meets the parent with the child and waits until the other parent picks up the child for the visit. It can also be where the Provider transfers the child from one parent to the other. Past history arrangements may be honored as long as they are following the current Court Order(s).

SUPERVISED / MONITORED VISITATIONS

        ... are basically a type of third-person visitation arrangements in which case a neutral third person must be present during every minute of a visitation. The purpose of monitored visitation is to provide a positive, safe experience for the child(ren) while with the non-custodial parent. Supervised visits may be order by the court for the following reasons:

    • to help reintroduce a parent after a long absence,
    • to help introduce a parent and a child when there has been no existing relationship between the parent and the child,
    • when there is a history or allegations of domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, or substance abuse;
    • when there are parenting concerns or mental illness; or
    • when there is a parental alienation and the threat of abduction.

Monitored visitation orders often come with hurt feelings, false accusations, past violent history and plenty of anger. Before the visit with the child(ren), each parent should make sure that they have dealt with their own raging emotions as the visit should focus ONLY on the child(ren). Inappropriate behavior or communication exhibited by the visiting parent will always end the visit. All parties should make sure that they know and read the Guidelines given by the Provider.
